Big Weekend 2010
Web Officer | Friday, June 4th, 2010 | No Comments »There are only two weeks to go until the biggest weekend in the Hiking Club calendar, Big Weekend Out! Celebrate the end of the year with all your friends in picturesque Buttermere for an epic weekend of fun, food and frolics!
Check out photos of the fun we had over Big Weekend last year in Borrowdale here.

So far the plan for this year is as follows:
Friday
Two minibuses will be leaving campus during the afternoon to take you to the campsite in Buttermere and after pitching the tents the rest of the evening is free for you to just chill out on the campsite, take a walk by the lake, head into the nearby pub or even go on a short hike, it’s entirely up to you.
We won’t be providing food on Friday but you’re more than welcome to bring your own or go down to the pub. As always there’s the possibility of a fish and chip stop on the way up.
Saturday
If you’re feeling up to a bit of exertion there will be a range of hikes on the Saturday. Buttermere is close to many great Wainwrights such as Red Pike, High Crag, High Stile, Kirk Fell and Great Gable. There are also more relaxed low level walks around the lake. As always, the exact walks will be decided on the day.
If instead you just want a lazy day, why not stay around the campsite and join in some of the games we’ll be bringing, including Twister and Jenga.
Everyone can join in with our massive QUEST during the day, with points awarded for things such as getting a photo of a trig point, fitting all your team in a telephone box or wearing someone else’s clothes. The winning team will get a special prize at the end of the weekend.
In the evening the barbeque master Mark will be in charge of feeding everyone at our last Club barbeque of the year, as well as getting everyone slightly gazeboed with his famous fruity punch which I’m sure you’ll remember from Social Weekend in October.
Sunday
Once the tents are packed away after a nice lie-in you’re free to do whatever you like. Chances are there will be another hike for those of you who are up for it, for everyone else it’s an opportunity to explore Buttermere, and possibly further afield. By early evening we’ll be heading back to Lancaster, though not before our customary stop in Keswick for battered sea creatures and potato slices.
Campsite and Gear
We’ll be staying at the Dalegarth Campsite in Buttermere just a short walk from the village and right on the lakeside. It’s a fantastic campsite which has several levels leading down to the lake, with plenty of space to spread out. There’s even a secret glade with amazing views. There’s all the essentials including toilets and showers which have just been done up, as well as a on-site breakfast bar.
You just need to bring the kit you would for a normal weekend trip (A reminder list will be emailed, but check out your Members’ Handbook or ask at sign-up what you’ll need). Don’t forget your sleeping bags, food for Friday, breakfasts and lunches, money and alcohol. The Club has tents, roll mats and Trangia cooking stoves for everyone who needs them.
Sign-ups
Open now! Just bring your yellow membership card and £20 to Faraday Foyer any weekday between 1-2PM to sign up. As always it’s first come, first served so if you want to guarantee a place pop down and see us as soon as possible.
If you want your non-Club friends to come and join in the fun all they need is a Purplecard and £5 to join the Club, and then they can sign-up to the trip too.
