Essential Trip Gear
Needed for all trips
To come on any Club trip you will need to have the following essential items. Please follow the guidance and recommendations here; for your own safety and comfort we reserve the right to prevent you departing on a trip if your gear is inadequate. Please do come to Faraday Foyer and ask us if you’re unsure about anything!
There are many outdoor shops in Lancaster, but as a Club member you can use your membership card to receive 10% discount at Ultimate Outdoors.

Boots and crampon-compatibility
If you want to come out walking with us during the winter when it’s been snowing, then you’ll need stiff-soled walking boots that can be fitted with crampons. Check out our own winter walking guide or Field & Trek’s guide to crampon compatibility for more information.
Needed for weekend trips
As well as the essentials above, for a weekend trip you’ll also need the following:
- Sleeping bag – 3/4 season or down filling for Scotland camping in Winter. Less insulation is fine in Summer or for bunkhouse trips.
- Spare clothing - For travelling and socialising when not hiking.
- Food – At least 2x Breakfast, 2x Lunch, 1x Evening. Bringing extra food is always a very good idea. You can usually assume we’ll stop at a Fish & Chip shop on the way there and back.
- Mug, Plate and Cutlery
Please try to minimise the amount of luggage you bring as space in the minibus or coach is finite and can’t be too heavy.
